"Hanzala" is not just a drawing, it is an expression of the identity, resilience, and renewed hope. He remains ten years old, the child of Palestine who left but is never gone. Hanzala represents the ultimate rejection of normalization and settlements that prejudice our dignity and our Arab identity. Each piece in this collection bears the story of Hanzala, the story of an exceptional people and their confrontation with injustice and displacement.

Hanzala was born at the age of ten and will always be ten years old. At that age, he left Palestine, and when Hanzala returns to Palestine, he will still be ten years old and then he will start to grow up. The laws of nature do not apply to him because he is an exception, just as losing the homeland is an exception. As for the reason for tying his hands, Naji Al-Ali says: I tied him after the October 1973 war because the region was witnessing a comprehensive process of domestication and normalization. Here, tying the child’s hands was an indication of his refusal to participate in the American settlement solutions in the region. He is a revolutionary, not a normalizer. When Naji Al-Ali was asked when he would show Hanzala’s face, he replied:

“When Arab dignity is no longer threatened, and when the Arab person regains his sense of freedom and humanity.” – Naji al-Ali.
